Engagement Shoot: Jana + Jeff
April 10th, 2012 § 4 Comments
I had the pleasure of doing makeup for my client’s engagement session over the holiday weekend, and we really had a good time creating her engagement photo look and wedding day makeup look. She was concerned about covering some hyperpigmentation and scarring from adult acne, so we decided to go with airbrush makeup. She loved her look and emailed me later that night:
“I would not have looked anything like this without you! Thank you!!!”
This is just one of the many reasons why I love being a makeup artist. Being able to use my artistry to enhance someone’s natural beauty is such a great feeling. Yes, I do think that beauty is skin deep, but let’s face it: When applied properly, makeup does make us look and feel good, and that’s a good thing.
These pictures are a few from Jana and Jeff’s engagement session with Jacqueline Campbell Photography. I’ve worked with Jacqueline and several of her brides over the years. I even did Jacqueline’s makeup for her beautiful Eastern Shore wedding. She’s an amazing photographer. Check out the rest of the images from the shoot and see more of Jacqueline’s work at JacquelineCampbellPhotography.com.

Face Chart Pro for iPad
March 23rd, 2012 § Leave a Comment
I don’t have an iPad, but EnKore Makeup’s FACE CHART PRO for iPad makes me want to get one. If you’ve ever designed a look on a textured paper face chart (using real makeup, brushes, Q-tips, your fingers, etc. ) then you understand why I appreciate what this app has to offer. With paper face charts there is little room for error as you can’t erase your mistakes. Too much eye shadow? Start over. But Face Chart Pro helps you create makeup looks on a digital canvas. I love the idea and concept of this app. Enkore describes it as the “ultimate digital tool for today’s working makeup professional (and makeup enthusiasts).” More on the app:
With the use of fingers, or a stylus, artists simply select any of the built-in brushes, color palettes, customize colors, and effects. Create colorful or neutral eye makeup looks, from eyes, skin finishes, blush, and lips. Adding effects such as rhinestones, glitter, and cheetah spots is easy. This app also features an eyelash drawer that allows artists to pick-n-tap eye lashes.
Some of the other features include:
- Canvas that fills the iPad screen.
- Five base canvas choices to begin with: Blank, Full Face with Open Eye, Full Face with Closed Eye, Open Eye, and Closed Eye.
Multi-Touch Interface:
- Two finger pan & zoom navigation
- Pinch in and out for controls
Brushes & Tools:
- Advanced paint engine delivers smooth and precise brush strokes.
- Multiple brushes used in the industry.
- Cotton Swab tool for cleaning and erasing
- Customizable brush settings for each brush and tools
- Undo and Redo button
- Mirror tool allows user to only create a look on one eye, or one side of the face, and then generate the other side automatically.
- Preset Makeup Color Palettes with their own separate categories.
- Custom color grid
- Eyelashes drawer
Gallery:
- Store and view work in progress
- Save finished charts to iPad’s Camera Roll
This app has been getting rave reviews, so I guess I have an excuse now to get an iPad! For more information and examples, visit www.FaceChartPro.com

Vera Wang does it again. The NYC-based designer known for her gorgeous wedding gowns and bridal fashion is launching a makeup line that will be sold exclusively at Kohl’s. The Simply Vera Vera Wang Cosmetics collection will be a 16-piece line that includes concealer, eye shadows, lipsticks and an eyelash serum and ranges in price from $16.50 to $39.50. I love that she continues to bring affordable beauty to everyone. She’s done it through her White by Vera Wang line of wedding dresses and bridesmaids dresses at David’s Bridal. She also recently launched a new Men’s Warehouse tuxedo collection. And now her beauty line will be joining her successful womenswear, home and accessories line at Kohl’s. The cosmetics line will hit shelves in April.
Preston Bailey Designs

In case you didn’t know
, I love doing makeup for weddings and special events. But aside from helping brides create their wedding day look, I also enjoy
hearing about their wedding plans from the decor and venue to the dresses, flowers, jewelry, colors and other carefully chosen details. One of the books I referred to when planning my own wedding was “Design for Entertaining” by award-winning wedding and event designer Preston Bailey. So I’m excited to see he has a new book which I will be adding to my library and it’s all about flowers: Preston Bailey Flowers: Centerpieces, Place Setting, Ceremonies, and Parties. If you’re not familiar with Preston, he truly is an artist. He is renowned for his breathtaking weddings, unique floral designs, centerpieces, floral artistry, and soooo much more. To quote a recent article from Munaluchi Bride:
” …[he brings] the extraordinary into the most ordinary of spaces. He is a true artist, creative force, and luminary whose presence in the event design industry for the past three decades has resulted in some of the most beautiful and elaborate designs ever seen.”
You truly have to see his work to believe it! He designed the dress for Munaluchi’s Fall/Winter 2011 cover which is absolutely gorgeous! A combination of phalaenopsis orchids, hydrangeas, tibet roses and rosita vendela roses were flown in from Taiwan, and it took 3 people 24 hours to create it.
Check out a recent interview he did with Munaluchi and view more of his breathtaking work on PrestonBailey.com.
Spring Beauty Looks
March 12th, 2012 § Leave a Comment
I’ve been reading about the many spring beauty looks that were featured at New York Fashion Week, and here are a few trends and standout looks that I’m particularly loving for the season. Note: All captions from Harper’s Bazaar Staff.
The Row: Luminous Skin
Beautiful skin defined the look that Estée Lauder Creative Makeup Director Tom Pecheux gave the models at The Row. As he says, it’s the way “any woman would want to look like when she wakes up in the morning.” In reality? Makeup and coffee are need to achieve this fresh-faced effect. Pecheux relied on some star products—Estée Lauder Idealist Even Skintone Illuminator to even out the complexion and a new, limited-edition Gelée Bronzer to contour the cheekbones. Last but not least, nail pro Deborah Lippmann painted on Estée Lauder Pure Color Nail Lacquer in Nude Attitude, a creamy white that we anticipate we’ll be seeing more of this season.
Tracy Reese: Lush Blush
Spring wouldn’t be spring without a peach-y cheek. The look at Tracy Reese was (thankfully) free of any shimmer and instead emphasized a natural, healthy glow. Lead makeup artist Mally Roncal dug into her kit to find her Mally Beauty 24/7 Blush, which she placed high on the cheekbones to create a soft flush with just a hint of dew.
Naeem Kahn: Strong Brows With Subtle Lips
The way to wear a bold brow—which is definitely the direction to go in this spring—is with a soft, neutral lip, says James Boehmer, NARS Director of Global Artistry. Here, he went with a nude-toned pencil and lipstick finished with a sparkling champagne beige gloss (NARS Larger Than Life Lip Gloss in Gold Digger to be exact).
Rodarte: Starry Eyes
This striking, smokey blue eye owes its beauty to Vincent Van Gogh’s “Starry Night,” which is what lead artist James Kaliardos for NARS Cosmetics had in mind backstage. For a likeness of the original, layer on gradations of rich blue, staring with Dark Rite Soft Touch Shadow Pencil (new for Spring 2012; for now, try Rue Saint Honore Larger Than Life Long-Wear Eyeliner) on the upper and lower lash lines, followed by a wash of Night Flight Single Eyeshadow rounded above the creases and topped with Tropic Single Eyeshadow for subtle sparkle.
Zac Posen: Defined Lashes
Makeup artist Kabuki had a specific image in mind at Zac Posen. “A late 1960s black and white fashion photo from Harper’s Bazaar by James Moore, featuring extremely long lashes,” she says. The face painter paid homage to the look by applying M.A.C. Blacktrack Fluidline liner through the roots of curled lashes and stacking M.A.C. Lashes in #2 and #7 on the upper lids. A few coats of M.A.C. Optimum Black Opulash Mascara provided a captivating finish.
Erin Fetherston: Sixties Side Pony
Mod makeup and hair set the clock back to the ‘60s at Erin Fetherston. Models turned up with side ponytails teased at the crown—just enough to make the cheekbones pop—while charcoal-smudged eyes contrasted perfectly with the peachy-pink lip, proving that this Factory Girl has some edge.
Oscar de la Renta: Elegant Frizz
Fancy frizz hair took a glamorous spin down the runway at Oscar de la Renta, where lead hairstylist Orlando Pita worked his magic to create the perfect crinkled texture. He started by wrapping small sections of strands into tight pin curls and letting everything dry. Then he brushed out hair to achieve the desired level of elegant pouf.
Any trends you’re thinking about trying? My fave is definitely Lush Blush from Tracey Reese. I love that it’s shimmer-free and the perfect healthy glow.
