Eye Shape Series: Deep-Set Eyes

June 28th, 2010 § 4 Comments

In this final post on eye shapes, deep-set eyes complete the series. What are deep-set eyes? Deep-set eyes appear to recede so they need to be brought forward. The eyelid crease is set back so the area from the base of the lashes to the brow bone seems hidden.

HOW TO BRING OUT DEEP-SET EYES

1. Highlight eyes with light shadows (think pale pink, peach, beige) from lid to brow; Use a shade darker in creases, but not too dark or you’ll create more depth and cause the area to look more receded.

This model has beautiful deep-set eyes.

2. Make your brow look more lifted (check out Iman’s brow) by sweeping a shimmery shadow right under your brows.

Penelope Cruz and Kim Kardashian also have deep-set eyes.

3. Line upper and lower lids. And use smudgeproof mascara because top lashes tend to graze upper lids on deep-set eyes.

I hope this series has helped show you a few ways to bring out your eyes the best.

Eye Shape Series: Hooded Eyes

In this third post on making the most of your eye shape, let’s look at hooded eyes and steps you can take to open them up. What is a hooded eye? What does it look like? Hooded eyes are set so the natural crease in the eyelid is not readily seen. Hooded eyelids tend to drag the eyes downward, sometimes creating a closed and sagging appearance.

Leelee Sobieski, Selma Blair and Nicole Kidman have hooded eye shapes.

HOW TO ENHANCE HOODED EYES

When applying makeup on a hooded lid, it is essential to create the look of depth and contour.

1. To give the appearance of more lid and to deemphasize your brow bones, apply a neutral eyeshadow that’s slightly darker then your skin tone from the lashline up to the brow. You can also sweep a lighter color on the inside corner of the eye.

2. Apply a medium to dark shadow on the crease and hooded area. You can also draw attention to the eyes with jewel tone shades such as emerald or navy. Gradually soften shadow as you approach the brow.

3. Line upper lash line. Draw a very thin line along the top lash line (to keep the eye looking open) and smudge.

4. Curl lashes and finish with several coats of mascara.

Eye Shape Series: Big Eyes

How do you complement big eyes without making them look bigger? Musician Zooey Deschanel is good example to demonstrate how this can be done.

HOW TO COMPLEMENT BIG EYES

1. To offset roundness, line only top lashes. Flick the liner up at the outer corners to create an almond shape. Notice in the picture on the left, that Zooey’s bottom lashes are also lined. This overemphasizes the roundness of her eyes and makes them appear bigger. However, in the picture on the right, the absence of liner on the bottom really lifts her eyes and they appear more almond shaped and less round.

2. Go for matte, pale shadows (think taupes, light browns) to give subtle color, and stay away from sparkle which can make eyes appear too wide.

3. Don’t load up on the mascara. Lightly define lashes — two coats is enough. Tip: Wipe excess mascara off the wand before applying.

Eye Shape Series: Small Eyes

June 23rd, 2010 § 1 Comment

As a makeup artist, my favorite feature to play up is definitely the eyes. I’m often asked what’s the best way to enhance and create the perfect peepers. It’s more than just swiping on shadow. Following are some tips to play up small eyes. And in the next three posts, we’ll explore tips for complementing big eyes, opening up hooded eyes and bringing out deep-set eyes.

Nia Long and Taylor Swift have small eyes.

HOW TO ENHANCE SMALL EYES

1. Trace powder or gel liner close to top lash lines, then lightly smudge. If you prefer liquid liner, make sure it’s not too dark or it will look harsh. Don’t encase eyes fully or you’ll close them up even more. I like: MAC Blacktrack Fluidline.

2. To make eyes seem larger, dab highlighter in the inner and outer corners of the eyes and right below your brow bone. I like: Senna Spot Lites Highlighting Pencil

3. Curl lashes before applying mascara for extra lift. I like: Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler; ARTISTRY Total Mascara
