These colors make me so happy! Nars Cosmetics has joined hands with Thakoon to debut a limited-edition line of nail polishes inspired by the designer’s Spring 2012 collection. PopSugar Shop said it best:  “The vibrant, exuberant colors channel the pulsating hues of an Indian spice market…” If you plan on wearing brights this season, these colors will look lovely!

Craving: NARS Galion Nail Polish

October 6th, 2011 § 2 Comments

Hey Blended Beauties! It’s been awhile since I’ve posted. Life has been busy for me as I recently gave birth to twin boys! But I’m back on the saddle and loving all that fall makeup has to offer: rich shades, bold colors, great textures, fabulous trends and sooo much more. I can’t wait to preview and review some of my favorites. So for starters, I’m craving NARS’ Galion nail polish ($17). It’s an opaque striking stormy grey that I can’t wait to try! What nail colors are you loving for fall? I’d love to hear so I can check them out too.

Master Your Makeup with Francois Nars

April 21st, 2011 § 1 Comment

In his new book, Makeup Your Mind: Express Yourself, Francois Nars shows how a little makeup goes a long way by transforming 56 real women. I am definitely adding this book to my makeup library. I love that fact that he is not just writing about the makeup application, but shows readers how it’s applied by including “before” and “after” pictures overlaid with clear acetate diagrams. I read that the diverse group of women and men depicted in the book were scouted on the streets of NYC. From some of the “before and afters” I’ve seen, the transformations are really amazing.

Makeup Your Mind: Express Yourself is available May 2. Until then, here are a few makeup tips from the man himself.

Top 3 Makeup Must-Haves

  • Splurge on a good foundation that matches your skin perfectly.
  • Always keep a smudge-proof mascara handy.
  • Cheat your minimal routine with a product that can be used on eyes, lips and cheeks.

Three Secrets to Perfect Skin Tone

  • After applying foundation, blend the excess on your neck to create a uniform canvas.
  • In addition to your cheeks, lightly brush on blush around the hairline, on the temples, on your jawline, and on the tip of your nose.
  • Use loose powder to soften any effect—too strong eyes, or oversculpted cheeks.

Make Your Lipstick Last

Lipstick woes. I’m sure we’ve all had them. Before you left the house, your lips were painted pretty. But by the time you got to work or finished your morning latte, it was long gone or fading fast. I get asked a lot, “Why does my lipstick wear off so quickly?” “Is there something I can do to make it stay put?” You bet there is. Here are some tips to ensure your lipstick makes a lasting impression.

PREP YOUR LIPS I can’t stress this enough because it really makes a difference in how your lipstick wears. Lipstick holds up best on a smooth surface. When I need to gently buff lips, I use a damp washcloth and Lip Polish to exfoliate. Then I pat on clear lip balm (Episilk is my favorite), let it sink in for a few minutes, then blot with a tissue.

PENCIL IT IN One of my favorite makeup artists, Sam Fine, says he always uses a lip pencil. I couldn’t agree more. Lip pencil adds a layer of pigment and helps color last. The key is to choose one that matches your lipstick. If your lipstick is very dark, then go one shade lighter. Lightly trace the pencil along the inside edge of your lips, then fill in your mouth and blot.

SEMI-MATTE & SATIN FINISH The good thing about many matte lipsticks: They are long-wearing. The bad thing: They can dry out your lips. A happy medium I’ve found are semi-matte and satin-finish lipsticks which are highly pigmented and non-drying. Satin lipsticks yield a creamy, silky finish; Semi-mattes a velvety finish. My faves: ARTISTRY and NARS.

GO BOLD Don’t be afraid of strong color. Go for a bright or dark shade because they have more pigment and they tend to last longer than soft ones.

SWIPE IT ON I like lip brushes for precision application but skip the brush and apply it straight from the tube for richer color payoff. Blot the first coat with a tissue, then add another layer.

FINISH WITH POWDER Don’t worry. The powder won’t dry out your lips if you don’t use too much. Close your mouth, smile and then dust a little face powder on your lips with a fluffy brush. And definitely don’t reapply your lipstick because it could get cakey.

Smooches!

Making Face with MAKE UP FOR EVER

September 2nd, 2009 § 4 Comments

As a makeup artist, it’s rare that I’m on the receiving end of an artist’s brushes. I don’t often get to sit down, kick my feet up, close my eyes and have someone else “beat” my face! Well, yours truly enjoyed all of the above recently when I stopped by Sephora while vacationing in San Diego. I walked in the store with no particular products in mind, but ended up playing and staying at the MAKE UP FOR EVER display the entire time.

MUFE Looks

I’ve always been a fan of MUFE. It has amazing shades and high-performance formulations. I tried to pull myself away but there were sooo many products I wanted to try. I’ve heard nothing but rave reviews about their HD foundation, matte velvet liquid foundation, duo matte powders, primers, eye shadows, eye liners, lip colors. The list goes on…

MUFE1

I was lost in MUFE world when a young woman, Justine, asked if I needed help. I told her I was just looking but that I really loved the line. We instantly connected. Turns out she was one of the store’s managers. We had a lot in common—both MUAs, beauty junkies, liked a lot of the same products—and ended up talking about all things makeup for over an hour. Before I knew it, she grabbed her brushes and started doing my makeup with her favorite MUFE products and a few goodies from some other lines.

MUFEDuoMatte

I purposely wore only my ARTISTRY Tinted Moisturizer (Tint 7) so I’d have a mostly bare canvas to play on. Her foundation of choice for me was Duo Matte Powder Foundation #214 which I loved, loved, loved. It’s a long-lasting, oil-free mattifying powder foundation perfect for my combination skin. When I say long-lasting, I’m not exaggerating. It lasted me well into the night, and I never had to touch up. It gave me a shine-free finish and evened out my skin tone. And if you need to cover blemishes or other imperfections? Duo Matte won’t disappoint.

MUFEFlashPalette

Flash Palette was another fave. This is a makeup artist must-have. You can create an array of looks with it, and it’s great for traveling. Use it on the eyes, cheeks and lips. Endless possibilities! Justine mixed a little of the coral and white to use as a base/primer on my eyes. This gave the eye shadows more staying power and made the color pop. She used Espresso 17 (matte chocolate brown) on my lid; Chocolate Matte 29 (matte warm dark brown) to accent my crease; and Champagne 11 (champagne beige shimmer) as a highlight under my brows. For added glitz and glam, she dabbed Star Powder#940 (white/orange) on the inner half of my eyes.

MUFEStarPowder

I was ga-ga over this shimmering, silky powder. It catches the light and gives skin a unique glow. Its texture is very fine yet dense. And only a small amount is necessary for a visible, faaaabulous result. You can also use it on areas of the face that need highlighting: around the eyes, on the cheekbones, and over lipstick.

MUFEAquaEyes

Next, she lined my eyes (top and bottom) with Aqua Eyes in Mat Black then reached for Smoky Lash mascara which gave my lashes curl, volume, length and intense pigment. She looked to NARS’ Lovejoy (shimmering bronzed rose) for my cheeks and swore I’d love her all-time favorite glosses, Buxom Lips by Bare Escentuals. She dolled them up with Eva Buxom (warm rose).

BEEvaBuxom

I have to admit I was sold on this lip gloss after trying it. It gave a luminous shine with no sticky or tacky feeling. My lips felt smooth and soft all day thanks to a deep infusion of antioxidant vitamins A and E. And the tingly and cooling sensation gave my lips a rush and immediate increase in fullness. I loved my overall look and will definitely add these items to my personal makeup bag. Thanks Justine!

Justine and I smile pretty for the camera after playing makeup in Sephora.
